Given this scenario, this study aims to describe the role of nurses in urgency and emergency care. The present study has a descriptive and exploratory character, carried out through bibliographical research. In order to do so, 20 references related to the subject of the study, published in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), were selected, specifically in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), PubMed, MEDLINE and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), from January 2000 to December 2015. The results showed that the nurse's role in Urgency and Emergency care exceeds the dimensions of care provided directly to the patient, since their practices also involve management and training of human resources. Only one article investigated the stages of care, and the main risks and consequences that nurses are exposed to when working in the urgency and emergence were contamination with biological material and stress, however, they may present cardiovascular risk and auditory symptoms. Finally, we emphasize that it is of paramount importance that nurses are aware of their role in providing quality and integral care to patients, which should include both service assistance and management, as well as strategies for the prevention of accidents with biological material.
ER -
