Resumo

Arugula propagation is carried out by seeds; thus, studies on seed treatment become essential in the search for more sustainable technologies. Currently among organic products exploited for use in agriculture, seaweed extracts have been prominent. The algae are a group that has shown favorable effects on the most varied cultures making it an alternative of use as a biostimulant. In this way, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of arugula seeds treatment with brown and red algae biostimulants on germination and seedling development. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a factorial scheme 2 x 4 (algae x doses) with five replications. The doses of 0, 1, 2 and 4 ml L-1 were used, and arugula seeds cultivar Antonella. After treatment, seeds were evaluated by: germination (percentage and speed), root andshoot length and root and shoot seedling dry mass. Results were submitted to variance analysis, Tukey test (p <0.05) for the qualitative factor (algae) and regression for the quantitative factor (doses). Arugula seeds treatment with brown and red algae biostimulants interferes with germination, with distinct effects between algae, however, no dose tested in this research promotes improvements in germination capacity and in the growth of arugula seedlings.
