Abstract

Sugarcane is the main agricultural crop produced in the state of Paraíba. The Brejo Paraibano being a region historically linked to the cultivation and processing of this crop. In this sense, this study aimed to evaluate the productive aspects of sugarcane culture in the period 1995–2019 in the municipality of Areia, in the Brejo Paraibano region. The data were obtained from the database of the Municipal Agricultural Research of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, from which seven variables were extracted: harvested area, planted area, planted area - percentage of the overall total, quantity produced, productivity, production value and production value - percentage of the grand total. Data were tabulated and subsequently subjected to principal component analysis. The productive dynamics of sugarcane showed high variability in the period under study, reflecting strong fluctuations in the productive variables of this crop. There was a temporal reduction in the planted and harvested area, however the amount produced did not show sharp drops, on the contrary, in several years it was higher than the beginning of the sampling period. Increased productivity of this crop was also registered, as well as greater participation in the total production value of temporary crops planted in the municipality. The analysis of principal components registered 75.8% of explanation of the original variance of the data in its first two axes and showed that years with smaller planted and harvested area had higher productivity for this crop in Areia. Given the importance of the sugarcane sector for the economy of the municipality under study, productive improvement strategies for this crop must be encouraged and implemented locally.
