Abstract
Ipomoea asarifolia (Desr.) Roem. & Schult., Convolvulaceae family, has been shown to cause poisoning in cattle, goats and sheep, especially during dry periods in the semiarid region of Brazil. In this sense, the present study aimed to carry out a literature review on cases of natural and experimental poisoning caused by I. asarifolia in ruminants, and to list the main chemical compounds that occur in this plant. For this, queries were carried out in the SciELO, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and PubMed databases, using specific keywords on the subject. A total of 24 scientific articles published in the last 20 years (2001-2021) were selected and included in this review. Several authors have reported that the main clinical signs presented by cattle, goats, and sheep intoxicated by I. asarifolia are: muscle tremors, imbalance and motor incoordination. These cases have been reported in the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Piauí, Ceará, Sergipe, Pernambuco, Tocantins, and Pará. The main chemical classes that occur in I. asarifolia are: phenolic compounds, terpenes and indole diterpene alkaloids. It is likely that indole alkaloids are associated with cases of poisoning by this plant. It is suggested that new studies be developed in order to elucidate the mechanisms of action of chemical compounds of I. asarifolia in the organism of animals.
