Socio-spatial segregation in Jataí: a look from the perspective of the appropriation of urban land

Abstract

There are different scholars of the urban area who consider the city as a collective formation, since it is formed by the whole, by the union of the most different groups. However, this collectivity ends there, as these distinct groups tend to move further and further away within the urban space, as in Jataí, which over the years has become increasingly segregationist due to economic issues. That said, we sought to understand this occurrence taking into account the appropriation of urban land and its relationship with the income of its citizens. The analyzes carried out allowed us to verify that this segregation imposed by income in jataí, ends up directing groups to inhabit or not some parts of the city according to their purchasing power. Thus, the higher regions and with less slope are directed to a public with a higher income, while the lower areas and with more accentuated slopes are directed to the low-income population. It is also worth mentioning that the neighborhoods aimed at the middle to upper class population are in more centralized regions, which have greater infrastructure with regard to the service sector, while the low-income population resides in poorer regions, needing to move to access public and banking services, among others.
