Abstract

Tracheal ruptures are life-threatening and uncommon in dogs, usually occur due to traumatic injuries such as bites wounds but can be iatrogenic. Subcutaneous emphysema occurs secondary to air leakage through the defect and can become generalized if not quickly repaired. Other symptoms include dyspnea and cyanosis. The diagnosis is based on clinical signs, history of fights, trauma or recent intubation and surgical exploration followed by correction of the defect. Clinical treatment is not recommended in most cases. The prognosis is favorable as long as the rupture is early corrected. The present study reports an animal presenting generalized subcutaneous emphysema secondary to surgically treated tracheal rupture.
