Feline babesiosis and co-infections: case report

Abstract

Feline babesiosis is caused by an obligate intracellular protozoan that is transmitted by an arthropod vector. The presence of this infection increases the susceptibility of the affected animal to contract other infections. The animal mentioned in this report was a cat, without defined race, male, eight months old with anorexia, weight loss and apathy. The patient was diagnosed with Babesia spp., Mycoplasma spp. and Feline Viral Leukemia (FeLV). Even after a few days of treatment, the patient developed severe hemolytic anemia and developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), where euthanasia was chosen.
