The relationship between low back pain and hamstrings in current literature

Abstract

Low back pain can be defined as pain, a sensation of tension or stiffness located below the marginal ribs and above the lower gluteal fold or referred to at the level of the pelvic girdle. Its etiology can be varied, such as vascular abnormalities, irregularities in painful neuromodulation and psychosocial factors, with the possibility of the hamstring muscles, responsible for knee flexion and hip extension, contributing to its pathogenesis. Therefore, the objective of this article was to review the current literature on the association between low back pain and hamstring muscles. The review was based on studies published on the PubMed and VHL Regional Portal platforms in the last five years – a period between 2018 and 2023. Most of the studies found point to a positive correlation for the association, emphasizing the influence of its shortening and hamstring asymmetry, such as contributors to pathogenesis, pain intensity and functional limitations. With demonstration of the relationship in the most diverse groups, from children to athletes. Therapeutic modalities such as stretching and muscle strengthening had an impact on analgesia. The recent technique of dry needling is therapeutically promising, although more analyzes are needed to obtain a greater degree of evidence. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate interventional techniques in order to compare their impacts on low back pain and patients' daily lives, such as analgesia, quality of life and functionality.
