Abstract

This article aims to provide readers with a quick, simple, and objective way to understand the principles of the Köppen-Geiger climate classification and to learn how to classify the climate of any region around the globe using this system. The text is primarily targeted at undergraduate students, especially those in the biological and agricultural sciences, such as biology, ecology, physics, geography, geology, agronomy, forestry and environmental engineering, architecture, and animal science, among other related fields. It also targets any Portuguese-speaking reader, whether unfamiliar with the subject or possessing various levels of knowledge in climatology, but who does not understand German and does not wish to read the extensive works published by Köppen, such as the Handbuch der Klimatologie from 1936, often cited by climatologists as a complex text requiring frequent back-and-forth reading to classify a given climate. This work is intended to serve as a practical guide for any reader seeking to understand, in a summarized way, this classic study, which is pioneering and represents the most widely used and important climate classification system in the world: the Köppen Climate Classification.
