Reports registered by Environmental Military Police in a region of the Midwest of Minas Gerais – Brazil

Abstract

Available data about environmental crimes registered in a determined region are primary to comprehend the dynamics of mankind actions over surroundings, which can guide public politics and provide tools for strategic planning and decision making into prevention, fighting and fiscalization of environmental crimes and infractions. This paper aims to analyse environmental police reports registered at the 15 cities attended by the 1st Battalion of Environmental Police of Minas Gerais of the 7th Regiment of Environmental Military Police, in order to present to fiscalization agencies and to society an overview for the occurrences of environmental crimes in the region. The methodology consists in the study of secondary data from the Environment Military Police database, throughout the analysis of environmental reports registered at it’s 15 cities, between the years of 2016 to 2018. The data was organized in a Microsoft Excel®️ sheet and treated with descriptive statistics. In the three years evaluated, the results show that most crimes are reported against the flora (62,3%), followed by crimes against the fauna (17,87%), potentially polluting activities (15,89%) and illegal fishing (3,94%). At the same time period, were registered 346 infractions against the flora (36,08%), followed by 341 infractions for potentially polluting activities (35,56%), 163 infractions against the fauna (17%) and 109 illegal fishing related infractions (11,36%). In regard to apprehended equipment, the greatest percentage went to cages (65,33%), followed by nets (23,87%), trapdoors (5,36%), cast nets (3,85%) and fire weapons (1,59%). In the period studied, a total of 1.482 species were apprehended or collected at the area of the 1st Battalion of Environmental Police of Minas Gerais. Birds were the predominant species with 91,3% of total, followed by mammals with 6,68% and reptiles with 2,02%. Amongst the main animals apprehended or collected, the order of Passeriformes and Psittaciformes corresponded, respectively, to 67,69% and 26,87% of total, with species like green-winged saltator Saltator similis and white-throated seedeater Sporophila spp standing out. Obtained results enabled a better comprehension of environmental problems at Minas Gerais midwest region and, moreover, highlights the relevant role played by the Environmental Military Police.
