Domestic accidents in children: a professional nurse's look

Domestic accidents are confirmed as non-purposeful events and most of the time are preventable. Its consequences range from physical and mental injuries or even inability to social development, and can happen in the home environment, which is considered a safe place for children. The assistance of health professionals, especially the nursing team, has a valuable role in terms of actions to reduce the harm resulting from these events. The present study aimed to present the performance of primary care nurses in the face of domestic accidents in children, combined with a narrative review of the literature, in which the database used for the recruitment of articles was the Virtual Health Library. It was possible to identify in the literature the performance of primary care nurses in the prevention and promotion of domestic accidents in children and the role of nurses in reducing damage and injuries arising from domestic accidents in children. In conclusion, the primary care nurse has a fundamental role in the prevention, promotion and reduction of harm arising from domestic accidents, mainly because they are avoidable.
